How to ship energy storage batteries

Lithium batteries, as 9 types of dangerous goods, must be operated in strict accordance with laws and regulations for international export. When carrying out air transportation, sea transportation, road transportation and railway transportation, in order to ensure the safety of transportation, in accordance with domestic and foreign regulations and standards on the transportation of dangerous goods , it is necessary to provide relevant reports on the identification of UN38.3, UN38.3 test summary, MSDS, 1.2m drop test, air & sea, and iron cargo transportation report.

Generally, the lithium battery factory will prepare below relevant reports before delivery. It can arrange UPS, DHL, and sea transportation which are mostly used.

UN38.3 Test

The energy storage test tests lithium batteries according to the UN 38.3 standard, including the following 8 test items: T.1 height simulation, T.2 thermal shock, T.3 vibration, T.4 shock, T.5 external short circuit, T. 6 Impact/Squeeze, T.7 Overcharge, T.8 Forced Discharge. Different types of lithium batteries are compared with the applicable test items as follows:

PI965: Batteries are shipped separately

PI966: The battery is shipped with the device

PI967: The battery is installed in the device and shipped

PI968: Transporting Lithium Metal Batteries Separately

PI969: Lithium metal battery packaged with device

PI970: Lithium metal battery installed in the device

Package 1.2M drop test

Small-energy lithium batteries, if transported in accordance with Clause 188 of Special Provision 188 of the UN Recommendations on the Transport of Dangerous Goods (21st), are carried in each package in any orientation, except for cells or batteries installed in equipment. During the 1.2m drop test, the battery cells or battery packs installed in it can not be damaged, and the contents will not move, so that the battery pack and the battery pack (or the battery cells and the battery cells) contact each other, and there is no leakage of the contents.

  • Low-energy lithium battery refers to a lithium metal battery cell with a lithium content of not more than 1g or a lithium metal battery pack with a lithium content of not more than 2g; or a lithium ion battery cell with a rated watt-hour value of not more than 20Wh or a battery pack of not more than 100Wh;
  • Not suitable for lithium batteries installed in equipment.

Report application information

Information required for UN38.3 reporting

  1. Fill in the application form (fill in the battery information)
  2. Battery specification
  3. Test the sample (the model, voltage, capacity and watt-hour value must be listed on the sample nameplate, and must be consistent with the battery when shipped and transported)

Information required for battery shipping report

If you need to issue a report on the identification of cargo transportation conditions (air/sea/land/rail)
The following information is also required:
