How does a lithium ion battery work?

Lithium-ion battery is a rechargeable battery that mainly relies on the movement of lithium ions between the positive and negative electrodes to work. Usually people call the process of lithium ions entering the positive electrode material intercalation, and the process of leaving is called deintercalation; the process of lithium ions entering the negative electrode material is called insertion, and the process of leaving is called deintercalation.

Lithium-ion batteries are developed from lithium batteries. Lithium-ion batteries have high energy density, high average output voltage, small self-discharge, and an operating temperature range of -20°C to 60°C.

Its cycle performance is excellent, it can be quickly charged and discharged, the charging efficiency is as high as 100%, and the output power is large, the service life is long, and it does not contain toxic and harmful substances. It is called a green battery. On the other hand, a lithium ion secondary battery is generally composed of an electrode assembly, a container accommodating the electrode assembly, and an electrolyte.

18650 lithium-ion battery packs are commonly used in a broad spectrum of applications, including:

  • Energy storage. Mainly used in base station power supply, clean energy storage, grid power storage, home solar storage system, etc.

  • Power class. Mainly refers to electric vehicles, electric bicycles, new energy vehicles, etc.

  • Digital consumer electronics. Mobile phones, tablets, laptops, electric toys, MP3/MP4, earphones, power banks, model airplanes, power banks, etc.

How to charge lithium ion battery without charger?

  • Lithium ion charge is similar to lead acid, we can also use the power source but be very careful. Check the full charge voltage, usually 4.20V/cell, and set the threshold accordingly. Make sure that none of the batteries connected in series exceed this voltage. (Protection circuits in commercial battery packs do this.) A full charge is reached when the battery reaches 4.20V/cell voltage and the current drops to 3% of rated current, or has bottomed out and cannot go any further. When fully charged, disconnect the battery. Never allow the battery to stay at 4.20V for more than a few hours, otherwise there is a danger of explosion.


  • Note that not all Li-Ion batteries are charged to the voltage threshold of 4.20V/cell. Lithium iron phosphate is typically charged to a cutoff voltage of 3.65V/cell and lithium titanate to 2.85V/cell. Some energy cells can accept 4.30V/cell and higher. It is important to observe these voltage limits.

How do you put out of a lithium battery fire?

  • Use a fire extinguisher to quell the flames. Usually after doing this, the fire is out and the battery is still smoking. Most fire extinguishers can achieve this effect.


  • Since Lithium batteries will reburn, it is important to cool the battery down with plenty of water if not cooled down. (Note) Keep watering.


  • It’s best to move the burning battery outside and call the fire department to deal with it.
