This is an entirely new recycling technology that keeps most of the cathode intact while scrapping all other materials in the battery. Next, fresh materials such as nickel and cobalt are added to the cathode to ensure the chemical composition is in just the right ratio. The result is an effectively renewed cathode powder, composed of tiny crystalline particles that can stick to metal strips and put into “new” batteries.
The researchers found that the recycled powder particles were more porous and therefore had more exposed surface area than cathodes made from scratch. All lithium-ion batteries are afraid of overcharging and short-circuiting. Compared with liquid lithium-ion batteries, polymer lithium-ion batteries have the advantages of thinness, any area, and any shape. Therefore, the battery casing can be made of a lighter aluminum-plastic composite film, thereby increasing the specific capacity of the entire battery; polymer lithium-ion batteries can also use polymers as negative electrode materials, and their energy will be higher than that of current liquid lithium-ion batteries. In addition, polymer lithium-ion batteries are superior to lithium-ion batteries in both operating voltage and charge-discharge cycle life. Based on the above advantages, polymer lithium-ion batteries are called next-generation lithium-ion batteries.
