What are applications of custom lipo batteries?

Ternary polymer lithium battery refers to a lithium battery that uses lithium nickel cobalt manganate (Li (NiCoMn) O2) as the positive electrode material of the battery and uses a gel polymer electrolyte. Electrolyte is used as the transport mode of ion movement, usually composed of solvent and lithium salt. The electrolyte of lithium secondary battery mainly includes liquid electrolyte, ionic liquid electrolyte, solid polymer electrolyte and gel polymer electrolyte. Gel polymer electrolyte is composed of polymer, organic solvent and lithium salt, and is prepared by mixing organic electrolyte with solid polymer matrix. Therefore, it generally exists in gel state, taking into account the advantages of solid electrolyte and liquid electrolyte. Considering that the electrolyte is confined in the polymer chain, it also has higher ionic conductivity in a wide temperature range (up to 10-3S/cm). Its big advantage is the high mechanical strength of the diaphragm, and the plastic film provides a large surface area. The thinner the plastic film, the higher the energy density, considering that more active materials can be embedded in the battery. In addition, its electrochemical stability is also very good, high temperature resistance, most high-temperature batteries currently on the market use polymer electrolytes.

Steps to Custom Lipo Battery

1. Custom Lipo Battery Cell

Before confirming the lipo battery assembly you need, please let us know the following:

  1. Charge & discharge current rate of the battery.
  2. The max size of whole lipo battery.
  3. PCM requirement. Generally, lithium poly cell adds PCM to protect short-circuit, over-current, over-voltage.
  4. Wire & connector model selection.

2. Cell selection

Based on the max size the customer provide, we will check and confirm the cell size. So we can evaluate the capacity, charge & discharge current rate, production artwork, and raw material proportioning.

It will be produced by following steps: positive & negative pole mixing, cathode & anode mixing, cutting, film-making, winding, aluminum plastic film making, assembly, injection, formation, second seal, grading, full test, Pack.

3.1. PCM design

1. Over-discharge protection: When the lithium-ion polymer battery is about to run out, the voltage reaches a minimum required value (usually 3V), the protection board will be turned off, and the product will not be able to discharge. 

2. Overcharge protection: When charging the polymer lithium-ion battery product, when the voltage reaches the highest voltage (4.2V), the protection board will automatically power off and shut down, indicating that it is fully charged and no longer continues to charge. 

3.2 PCM design

3.3 Short-circuit protection: When the polymer lithium-ion battery is accidentally short-circuited, the protection board will automatically shut down within a few milliseconds and will not be powered on.

3.4 Over-current protection: When the polymer lithium-ion battery is discharged, the protection board will have a maximum current limit. Different products are different. When the discharge exceeds this current, the protection board will automatically shut down.

4. PACK assembly

Battery pack generally refers to assembled batteries, mainly refers to the processing and assembly of lithium battery packs, mainly to process cells, battery protection boards, battery connection sheets, label paper, etc. into products required by customers through the battery pack process. The battery pack is now mainly concentrated in the lithium battery pack factory. They all have their own pack structure design, pack electronic design, and pack production workshop. They can independently develop and design according to the needs of customers. Through the battery scheme, battery specification, battery After the samples meet the customer’s PACK lithium battery customization requirements.

5. Wire & connector selection

As the wire or connector are the electricity exit port, we shall confirm whether customers need wires or connector. Ref it is wires, they usually 2 wires AWG 32#,  30#, 28#, 26#, then customer solder the pins to main board. Ref it is connector, we will consider the female connector to repair. Usually they are JST, Molex. Of course, sometimes it requires 3 Pin or 4 Pin at end. Please see the following connectors for reference.

  • Over-charge protection: At 20±5℃ conditions, after fast-charging, use an external 5V power to charge the battery and last for 24 hours, then check the appearance of battery.

  • Over-discharge protection: At 20±5℃ conditions, discharge battery to 2.5V with 0.2C constant current, then discharge with 30Ω loading for 24 hours. Check the appearance of battery.

  • Short-circuit protection: After fast-charging, use a cable of 0.1Ω resistance to short the battery for 24 hours. Then check the appearance of battery.

  • External short-circuit test: Cell terminals are short-circuited to discharged state less than 0.1V or longer time with a resistance of 50mΩ or less. Tests are to be conducted at room temperature.

  • Heating test: The temperature of the oven is to be raised at a rate of 5±2℃/min. to a temperature of 130±2℃, and remains for 30 minutes at this temperature.

  • Crush test: crush between two flat plates. The applied force is about 13kN.

  • Impact test: Impact between bar (15.8mm diameter) and 9 Kg falling material (at a height of 50 cm). Bar is laid across the center of the test sample.

  • Drop test: Drop a fully charged cell onto a concrete floor from the height of 1.0 meters for 2 times.

  • Vibration test: Vibrate the cell in tri-axial directions each for 90~100 min. in conditions of 10~55 Hz with amplitude 0.8 mm.

  • Nail test: The battery is fully charged in standard charging condition,Standby for 2 hour, a nail is penetrated vertically through the center of the cell (The diameter of the nail is 3.0mm.)

  • K value test: Battery temperature 20±5℃ under the use requirements of the daily voltage drop requirements ≤2mV or others.
