Chinese new energy vehicle power battery materials mainly include Li(NiCoMn)O2 materials, LiFePo4, LiMn₂O₄, Li4Ti5O12, etc. Among them, Li(NiCoMn)O2 and LiFePo4 are the absolute main force. According to data from the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance, from January to October 2021, the cumulative installed capacity of power batteries in my country is 107.5GWh. Among them, the loading volume of ternary batteries increased by 100.1% year-on-year to 54.1GWh, accounting for 50.3% of the total loading volume; the loading volume of lithium iron phosphate batteries increased by 316.4% year-on-year to 53.2GWh, accounting for 49.5% of the total loading volume; the two together accounted for the total loading volume. The amount is 99.8%.
From the data point of view, the monthly loading of lithium iron phosphate batteries in my country has continued to exceed that of Li(NiCoMn)O2 since July this year, and the cumulative loading in the first 10 months has also approached that of Li(NiCoMn)O2 batteries.
Two types of power battery vehicles (MWh) from January to October 2021
According to data from the Power Battery Application Branch of China Chemical and Physical Power Industry Association, in the first half of this year, the installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries for new energy passenger vehicles in the Chinese market was about 16.76GWh, accounting for 74.42% of the overall installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate.
As the world’s largest new energy vehicle market, my country has many lithium iron phosphate battery suppliers. In 2020, the domestic installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries is 21.7GWh, and the top 10 companies are CATL, BYD, Gotion Hi-Tech, EVE Energy, REPT, Greatpower, Lishen, CALB, A123 System and Anchi New Energy. Among them, the installed capacity of CATL lithium iron phosphate battery is 13.7GWh, and the market share is 46.1%. BYD’s installed capacity is 4GWh, with a market share of 18.4%. Gotion Hi-Tech has an installed capacity of 2.9GWh, with a market share of 13.4%.
In the first half of this year, the top 10 battery companies in the Chinese market by installed capacity of lithium iron phosphate batteries are CATL, Fudi Battery, Gotion Hi-Tech, Greatpower, EVE Energy, REPT, Microvast, Lishen, A123 System and Anchi New Energy.

CATL was established in 2011. In 2012, it received an order from BMW for electric vehicles. In 2013, it developed bus power batteries for Yutong. According to the data of the Advanced Industrial Research Institute, in 2017, there were 74 domestic car companies in the CATL era, and in 2019, the number rose to 120. In 2020, CATL won another order from Tesla. As of 2020, CATL has ranked first in the global power battery installations for four consecutive years.
In the domestic new energy vehicle power battery market, Ningde era occupies half of the country. From January to October this year, the installed capacity of batteries in CATL was 54.48GWh, accounting for 50.7% of the total domestic market.
On March 29, 2020, BYD officially launched the blade battery, announcing that its cruising range has reached the same level as the ternary battery. Recently, BYD has increased its investment in batteries. For example, its subsidiary Guiyang Fudi Battery has been put into production in May this year. On August 3, 6 and 24 this year, BYD established Wuwei Fudi Co., Ltd. and Yancheng Fudi Battery respectively. Co., Ltd., Jinan Fudi Battery Co., Ltd.
From January to October this year, BYD’s battery installed capacity was 17.88 GWh, accounting for 16.6% of the total domestic market.
- Gotion Hi-tech
As the most loyal “believer” of lithium iron phosphate, Guoxuan Hi-Tech’s perennial persistence in the field of lithium iron phosphate has gradually gained market recognition and rewards. In the first half of the year, the installed capacity of Gotion Hi-Tech lithium iron phosphate battery was about 2720.63MWh, a year-on-year increase of 343.4%.
From January to October this year, Gotion Hi-Tech battery installed 5.52 GWh, accounting for 5.1% of the total domestic market.
At present, EVE Energy Lithium Iron Phosphate batteries mainly supply commercial vehicles such as buses and passenger cars. The main customers include Nanjing Jinlong, Geely and Dongfeng. At the same time, Yiwei Lithium Energy has launched a corresponding layout in the fields of high-end passenger vehicles and energy storage. In the field of passenger vehicles, in this year’s 1-8 batches of new energy vehicle recommended catalogues, Yiwei Lithium Energy has a total of 187 supporting models. Except for a ternary lithium battery for Hezhong New Energy, the rest are lithium iron phosphate battery.
This year (up to now) EVE Energy has increased the production capacity of power and energy storage batteries 9 times, and the total capacity of EVE has been planned to be nearly 300GWh. From January to October this year, the installed capacity of EVE energy was 2.12 GWh, accounting for 2.0% of the total domestic market.
Greatpower ranked 12th among the top 15 power battery companies in my country in terms of vehicle loading from January to August this year. Its vehicle loading volume from January to August was 0.8 GWh, accounting for 1.0% of the total domestic market. When answering questions from investors, Penghui Energy revealed that the company’s current production and sales of new energy vehicle power batteries are all lithium iron phosphate batteries; the expansion plan for lithium iron phosphate power batteries in 2021 is 4GWh.
REPT was established in 2017. In 2020, 78% of the installed capacity of Ruipu Energy is lithium iron phosphate, and its customers include SAIC-GM-Wuling, Dongfeng, Jinlong, Yutong, Foton, Shenlong and other enterprises. There are fewer ternary batteries, and the customers are Yundu Automobile and Weimar Automobile. In 2020, Ruipu will supply Wuling E100 and E200. Among them, E100 can ship up to 8,000 sets/month. In 2020, the installed capacity of Ruipu was 0.99Gwh, and SAIC-GM-Wuling accounted for 73%.
In the passenger vehicle market, Anchi New Energy’s lithium iron phosphate battery was supplied with a model of Changan Auchan in the first half of the year, with a supply volume of 27.94MWh, and the rest were mainly used for commercial vehicles.
From January to June this year, the installed capacity of Microvast Power lithium iron phosphate battery is about 138.86MWh, and the supporting models are Roewe eRX5, Roewe ei6 MAX, Roewe ei6, MG6 and other models. This also shows that, following lithium titanate, Microvast Power’s lithium iron phosphate battery has begun to be supported on a large scale.
- A123 System
In the first half of this year, A123 lithium iron phosphate battery customers and supporting models are basically the same as those of Weihong Power, which are also the above-mentioned models of SAIC Group. In November, the first phase of the lithium battery project with an annual output of 80GWh in Wanxiang Innovation Gathering City entered the purification and decoration stage. It is expected that the equipment will be ready by the end of January next year, the equipment will be commissioned in March, and the trial production capacity will be available in June.
AVIC Lithium was established in Luoyang in 2007. From January to October this year, AVIC’s lithium battery installed capacity was 6.42 GWh, accounting for 6.0% of the total domestic market. In August this year, the AVIC Lithium Power 50GWh power battery and energy storage battery industrial base project settled in Hefei.
The predecessor of SVOLT Energy was the Power Battery Division of Great Wall Motors. Since 2012, the pre-research work of battery cells has been carried out. In February 2018, it became SVOLT Energy Technology Co., Ltd. independently. From January to October this year, the installed capacity of cellular energy batteries was 2.05 GWh, accounting for 1.9% of the total domestic market. In October, SVOLT Energy’s L600 short-blade lithium iron phosphate battery rolled off the production line at its Jintan factory.
Tafel New Energy Technology was established in 2014. The main production base is located in Nanjing, Jiangsu. At the same time, it has branches (subsidiaries) in Shenzhen, Dongguan, Beijing, Taiwan and other places. From January to October this year, the installed capacity of Tafel new energy batteries was 2.01 GWh, accounting for 1.9% of the total domestic market. The energy density of lithium iron phosphate products mass-produced by Tafel is ≥150Wh/kg.
Sunwoda supplies lithium iron phosphate products for Dongfeng Liuqi Lingzhi CM5EV and other products. In July this year, Xinwangda and Geely established a joint venture. In November, it signed a letter of intent for joint venture and cooperation with Wuling Industry, intending to set up a joint venture covering new energy vehicle power battery systems in Liuzhou, Guangxi. From January to October this year, Sunwoda’s battery installed capacity was 1.36 GWh, accounting for the total domestic market. 1.3% of the amount.
JEVE Power ranked 10th among the top 10 power battery companies in my country in terms of vehicle loading from January to September this year. Its vehicle loading volume from January to September was 1.05 GWh, accounting for 1.1% of the total domestic market. On October 23, Gateway Power started construction of a new energy battery production base project in Changxing, Huzhou, Zhejiang Province. It is expected to be put into use in early 2023. The products will include soft packs and square series products. The technical route covers lithium iron phosphate and ternary materials. system.
Lishen Battery ranked 11th among the top 15 power battery companies in my country in terms of vehicle loading from January to August this year. Its vehicle loading volume from January to August was 0.8 GWh, accounting for 1.0% of the total domestic market. In April 2019, the first phase of Lishen Battery Qingdao Base was put into production. The base has an overall planned annual output of 10GWh lithium iron phosphate square lithium-ion battery system, and the production line is compatible with lithium iron phosphate and ternary systems. The designed annual production capacity of the first phase is 4GWh. After reaching the production capacity, it will provide battery support for 20,000 buses or 120,000 passenger cars every year.
- DFD Energy
DFD New Energy ranked 15th among the top 15 power battery companies in my country in terms of vehicle loading from January to August this year, and its loading volume from January to August was 0.5 GWh, accounting for 0.7% of the total domestic market. DFD energy stated on the investor interaction platform in November that the company’s lithium battery is currently a ternary soft-pack lithium battery, and will produce cylindrical and square batteries at the same time in the future, and the cathode material will also expand to lithium iron phosphate.
