What is 18650 rechargeable battery?

The 18650 lithium battery number 18650 represents the external specifications: 18 represents the diameter of 18mm, 65 represents the length of 65mm, and 0 represents the cylindrical battery. It is a standard lithium-ion battery type set by SONY in Japan to save costs, and is called 18650 lithium battery.

The 18650 lithium battery is an industrial battery. It does not contain over-charge and over-discharge protection. Lithium batteries are prone to over-discharge during operation. These conditions can cause damage or permanent failure of lithium batteries. Therefore, whether it is a single 18650 lithium battery or a 18650 battery pack product, it must be equipped with a protection circuit.

How to charge 3.7V 18650 4200mAh li-ion rechargeable battery for flashlight torch?

  • Constant current & voltage charge. Let it charge at 4.2V and 2A (voltage & current). Standard temperature 20±5℃ Charging battery consist of charging at constant current rate of 0.2C until the battery voltage reach 4.2V .then battery be charged at constant voltage of 4.2V while tapering the charge current. Terminal charge until the charging current drops to 0.02C. Anyway, the total charge time for one cycle is not more than 8 hours.
  • Standby 5 mins.
  • Constant current discharge. Let it discharge to 3V by 2A current. Standard temperature 23±2℃ discharge to the cut-off voltage with 0.2C current.
  • Standby 5 mins.

Four classification methods of 18650 lithium-ion battery

The 18650 lithium-ion battery must have a protective plate to prevent the battery from being overcharged and discharged. This is also a general disadvantage of lithium-ion batteries, because the material used is the basic lithium cobalt oxide material. The following is a classification of 18650 lithium-ion batteries from 4 different angles.

  • Classification according to the actual performance of the battery

    Power batteries and energy batteries. Energy type batteries have the characteristics of high energy density and are mainly used for high energy output. Power type batteries have the characteristics of high power density and are mainly used for instantaneous high power output and output batteries. 

    A simple understanding is that the energy type is similar to a marathon runner. To have endurance, it requires high capacity, and the high current discharge performance is not high; so the strength is a sprinter, and the battle is an explosion of strength, and endurance is also required, otherwise the ability is too small. can’t run far.

  • According to the electrolyte material

    Lithium-ion batteries are divided into liquid lithium-ion batteries (LIB) and polymer lithium-ion batteries (PLB).

    Liquid lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte (currently used in power lithium batteries). Lithium-ion polymer batteries are replaced by solid polymer electrolytes, which can be either dry or colloidal, most of which are currently polymer gel electrolytes. In a solid-state battery, both the electrodes and the electrolyte are solid.

  • Classification according to product appearance

    Divided into: cylinder, soft bag, square.

    Steel or aluminium housings in cylindrical and square packages. The flexible packaging is aluminum-plastic film. In fact, the flexible packaging is square. The aluminum-plastic film packaging commonly used in the market is called flexible packaging, and some people call it polymer battery.

    Regarding cylindrical lithium-ion batteries, the model number is usually 5 digits. The first two digits are the diameter of the battery, and the middle two digits are the height of the battery. It’s in mm. For example, an 18650 lithium-ion battery has a diameter of 18 mm and a height of 65 mm.

  • Classification by pole piece material

    Cathode materials: Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP), Lithium Cobalt Oxide (LCO), Lithium Manganese Oxide (LMO), (Binary Battery: Lithium Nickel Oxide / Lithium Nickel Nickel Oxide), (ternary Battery: Nickel oxide nickel manganese lithium ion battery (NCM), nickel aluminate lithium-ion battery (NCA)).

    Cathode materials: Lithium titanate battery (LTO), graphene battery, carbon nanofiber battery.

1. Consultants

To understand the real demands of the 18650 rechargeable battery pack, you need to provide the lithium battery size, electrical performance requirements, output requirements, and functional information.

2. Quick Response

Evaluate a solution and quote the known parameters provided by the customer, also provide full datasheet for reference. We will consider the cell selection, circuit and structure design to final assembly.

3. Sampling

After the customer’s approval, we will start to make samples for the 18650 rechargeable battery pack, and provide charging and discharging cycle curve and data.

4. Sample Test

Before delivering out, we definitely do battery pack aging test. Assist and track customer test results, as well as customer’s overall equipment operation effect.

5. Certificate Proceed

We will discuss with customer certificate works based on the final country and applicate requests. It may be MSDS, UN38.3, IEC62133, KC, PSE, etc.

6. Mass Production

Develop process documents and BOM sheet, purchase materials, arrange staff production, quality personnel monitoring, and random inspection, and package and shipment.
